Marian Medical Center’s Telemetry Department has been named an Innovation Award winner in healthcare service quality and patient satisfaction for 2007 by Avatar International, a leader in healthcare research and consulting.
The award is based on the results of the hospital’s patient surveys over a ten month period from March 2007 through December 2007. “During that time period our department consistently rated above the national average for patient satisfaction,” says Jean Sysak, RN, Manager Telemetry. “I am so proud of our staff and proud of the wonderful departments like Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Dietary and also our physicians that care for our patients on 2 North. This is really an accomplishment for all at Marian.”
Avatar International credits the department with implementing ideas or innovative technology to enhance patient care. In response to patient feedback, the Telemetry department has implemented hourly nurse rounding to ensure each patient is as comfortable as possible, individualized care planning, bedside reporting and increased patient education.
The department also began an aggressive and creative recruiting plan to ensure the best possible nurses and caregivers were and continue to be hired to care for patients. As a component of this, a nursing Student Intern Program was developed to provide a unique opportunity for existing nursing aides and licensed vocational nurses to return to school to pursue a nursing career, while working part-time in clinical areas of the hospital.
In addition to program changes, the physical lay-out of the Telemetry unit was modified from a single nursing station to five small nursing stations throughout the unit. This allows the nursing staff the ability to monitor patients more closely and respond to their needs quickly.
As a result of this new approach to patient care, the patient satisfaction in the Telemetry Department has stayed above the national average for 10 consecutive months, March through December 2007. The results today are even better.
“Innovation is often thought of as merely brilliant ideas. However, true innovation encompasses the hard work required for turning those ideas into reality,” said Michael Everett, PhD, Avatar Founder and CEO. “Marian’s Telemetry Department is to be congratulated for first--listening carefully to the voice of patients, second--to thinking about how the patient experience could be dramatically improved, and last--going the extra mile and working hard to implement the innovative changes. Marian Medical Center is also to be congratulated for fostering a culture where innovation can take root.”
The Innovation Award was presented at Avatar International, Inc.’s annual conference held in Orlando, Florida.
