Marian Medical Center is pleased to announce that the hospital has officially opened the new 8-bed Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
Marian’s Newborn ICU received official licensing by the State of California on Monday, December 20, 2010, certifying that Marian has the capabilities to care for the sickest and most vulnerable infants by offering NICU experienced staff and new state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Construction on the 3,500-square-foot Newborn ICU project began in September of this year and was completed on-schedule within three months.
“The opening of Marian’s all-new state-of-the-art Newborn ICU is an historic milestone for not only Marian Medical Center, but for also the Santa Maria community and entire Central Coast,” states Kerin Mase, Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing Executive, Marian Medical Center. “Our staff is specially-trained and prepared to care for our youngest and most vulnerable patients; and it is our mission to get all premature or sick babies healthy and home as soon as possible.”
Although Marian’s 8-bed Newborn ICU is now open within the current facility, the hospital’s Newborn ICU capabilities will continue to expand as the new Marian Medical Center facility (which is on-schedule to open in early 2012) will include a new 21-bed Newborn ICU.
“Due to the dedicated efforts of all the staff at Marian, we will be able to keep Marian’s smallest and most vulnerable patients here at home – where they belong. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of all babies born in the United States require treatment in a Newborn ICU, this is why it is especially important that in times of crisis we keep families together,” says Dr. Edward Alderete, Medical Director of Neonatology Services, Marian Medical Center. “Marian Medical Center has made a strong commitment to maternal, fetal and infant care in this community and, in turn, the community has truly supported us in this effort.”
Marian’s multidisciplinary Newborn Intensive Care Unit Team is comprised of dedicated medical professionals including renowned neonatologists, highly educated and skilled neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, dieticians, lactation consultants and other hospital staff, collaboratively work each day, to ensure that all babies born at Marian receive the highest quality of care in a safe, comfortable and caring environment.
